Legendary Pakistan seamer Waqar Younis heaped praise on batsman Haris Sohail, saying he played “magnificently well” against South Africa on Sunday.

Haris was named Man of the Match for his 59-ball 89, which included nine boundaries and three sixes.

His efforts with the bat not only led Pakistan to a 49-run win at Lord’s, but also kept their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup semi-finals alive.

“He played magnificently well, and ultimately, his innings… was the difference,” Waqar wrote in his column for the International Cricket Council as quoted by Reuters. “Pakistan have needed someone to come in at five or six and up the ante.

“Haris has always been a very conservative and technically sound batsman but against South Africa, he took the mantle and played in a very different fashion.”

Pakistan’s next World Cup match will be against New Zealand at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
