Kane Williamson celebrates after scoring his 13th ODI century

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson scored a career-best 148 as his side survived a sensational 101 from West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite to triumph by five runs in Manchester.

Opting to bowl first, the West Indies got off to the best possible start as Sheldon Cottrell trapped New Zealand opener Martin Guptill lbw for a golden duck on the first ball of the match.

Cottrell struck again four balls later as he clean bowled Colin Munro, who opened the batting with Guptill, for a golden duck.

Williamson and Ross Taylor stabilised the innings with a 160-run partnership, during which both batsmen cruised past their half-centuries, before Taylor was caught by West Indies captain Jason Holder at mid-off off the bowling of Chris Gayle for 69, which came off 95 balls and included seven boundaries.

Tom Latham only scored 12 runs before he was caught and bowled by Cottrell, who also removed Williamson for a 154-ball 148, which included 14 boundaries and a six.

With Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner and James Neesham making a quickfire 16, 10 and 28 respectively, New Zealand finished on 291/8.

Cottrell was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Brathwaite snapped up two and Gayle chipped in with one.

Chasing 292 to win, the West Indies lost opener Shai Hope early on as he was clean bowled by Trent Boult for one run.

Nicholas Pooran suffered the same fate as Hope after scoring one run as well.

Gayle and Shimron Hetmyer steadied the ship with a 122-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their fifties, before Hetmyer was clean bowled by Lockie Ferguson for 54, which came off 45 balls and included eight boundaries and a six.

Ferguson struck again the very next ball as Holder was caught behind for a golden duck.

Gayle ended up making an 84-ball 87, which included eight boundaries and six sixes, before he was caught by Boult at long-on off the bowling of Colin de Grandhomme.

Boult then took out Ashley Nurse and Evin Lewis in the space of four balls, while Kemar Roach was caught behind off the bowling of Matt Henry for 14.

Cottrell mustered 15 runs before he was cleaned up by Ferguson.

However, Brathwaite kept the West Indies in the hunt as he continued taking the attack to New Zealand’s bowlers.

But, on the last ball of the 49th over, he was caught by Boult long-on off the bowling of Neesham for a career-best 101, which came off 82 balls and included nine boundaries and five sixes.

Brathwaite’s dismissal spelled the end for the West Indies as they were bowled out for 286.

Boult was the most successful bowler with four wickets, while Ferguson took three, and Henry, Neesham and De Grandhomme claimed one wicket each.

Williamson was named Man of the Match.
