Legendary Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar has called captain Sarfraz Ahmed “brainless” for choosing to bowl first in his side’s World Cup clash against India on Sunday.

Akhtar noted that Pakistan aren’t very good as chasing scores and thus should have opted to bat first.

India scored 336/5 off their 50 overs behind opener Rohit Sharma’s 140 and Pakistan weren’t able to keep up with the run rate.

As a result, they lost quick wickets and ended up losing the match by 89 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

India’s victory extended their unbeaten streak against Pakistan as they have now won all seven of their meetings against their arch-rivals in the World Cup.

“The mistakes committed by the Indian team during the Champions Trophy 2017 final were repeated by Pakistan today,” Akhtar was quoted as saying by cricketpakistan.com.pk. “I can’t understand how Sarfraz can be so brainless. How could he forget that we don’t chase very well. Knowing our strength, which is bowling, is important. The toss was very crucial and even if Pakistan had made 260, with their bowling, they could have defended it.

“It’s a very saddening and disheartening performance from the Pakistan team captain. I wanted to see shades of Imran Khan in him but it’s too late for him now.”

Pakistan’s next World Cup match will be against South Africa at Lord’s on Sunday.
