Former Pakistan pace bowler Sarfraz Nawaz was not at all impressed that left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir took a five-wicket haul in his side’s World Cup match against Australia on Wednesday.

Amir took his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs in the match, but it wasn’t enough as the men in green lost by 41 runs.

With that five-for, the 27-year-old is now the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 10 wickets at an average of 12.30.

However, Sarfraz noted that Amir only got his five-for when Australia “were in a very comfortable position”.

“A frontline bowler [was supposed] to provide early breakthroughs, in which not only Amir but all other bowlers badly failed,” Sarfraz told The Nation. Amir did pick up five wickets, but it was all done when the Aussies were in a very comfortable position. Dropped catches were the highlight of Pakistan’s fielding. It seemed like club cricketers were playing against a national side.”

Pakistan’s next World Cup game will be against arch-rivals India in Manchester on Sunday.
