Former Pakistan left-arm spinner Iqbal Qasim believes that openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman will play a key role in their side’s World Cup match against Australia in Taunton on Wednesday.

Qasim noted that Imam and Zaman have to get Pakistan off to a good start like India openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan did on Sunday.

Rohit and Dhawan amassed a 127-run partnership as India went on to beat Australia by 36 runs.

While Australia will be looking to bounce back from that loss, Pakistan will be looking to build on their win against England as they weren’t able to do so against Sri Lanka since their match was washed out.

“I feel India won the match against Australia due to nerves and clever captaincy by Kohli and I expect same from Sarfraz,” Qasim told The Nation. “The way the Indian openers saw off the initial overs and kept the scoreboard ticking, the same approach is required from Fakhar and Imam, while Babar Azam and Hafeez can bolster the innings in the middle overs.

“Hafeez is enjoying a good run after playing well against England, while Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz are the backbone of Pakistan’s batting [line-up]. If they stay at the crease and score a few runs, Pakistan can easily post [a total of] 350 plus.”
