Wasim Akram firmly believes that opening batsman Fakhar Zaman will be Pakistan’s key player throughout the World Cup.

In the recent five-match ODI series against England, Zaman scored 200 runs, which included a century and fifty, at an average of 40.

Akram admitted that it is imperative Zaman score runs at the top of the order as it will lay a solid foundation for the best of the Pakistan batsmen to build on.

However, in addition to Zaman, the legendary left-arm seamer pointed out that opener Imam-ul-Haq also has to fire.

Imam accumulated 234 runs in four games against England, which included a career-best knock of 151, at an average of 117.

“Fakhar is an attacking player. He has been there for long and now people know how to bowl him. It is now up to Fakhar how to counter the opposition’s strategy on him as bowlers are not going to give him room. The opening pair has to fire,” Akram told Geo.tv.

Pakistan will begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on Friday.
