Legendary pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar has called on the people of Pakistan to back the national team, even after they were annihilated by seven wickets in their World Cup opener against the West Indies.

Pakistan had been looking to start their World Cup campaign on a high, but it was an absolute nightware as they were skittled out for a dismal score of 105.

Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam were the top scorers as they both made 22 runs, while Wahab Riaz chipped in with a quickfire 18 at the end.

Mohammad Hafeez was the only other batsman to reach double figures as he made 16.

Despite Akhtar saying he was “speechless” after seeing the men in green’s batting line-up collapse, he urged the fans and people of Pakistan to “back these boys”.

“Ok the match is over. Recollecting my thoughts and emotions. We have to back these boys, they are representing our nation. They need our support throughout the World Cup,” he said on Twitter.

Pakistan’s next match will be against hosts England in Nottingham on June 3, while the West Indies will take on Australia at the same venue on June 6.
