JP Duminy: “While a decision like this is never easy, I also feel that it is the right time for me to pass on the baton”

South Africa all-rounder JP Duminy has announced that he will be retiring from ODI cricket after the World Cup in England and Wales later this year.

However, Duminy will continue to be available to represent the Proteas in Twenty20 Internationals.

The 34-year-old retired from Test cricket back in September 2017.

Duminy will play his last ODI on home soil on March 16 when South Africa take on Sri Lanka in the fifth ODI in his hometown of Cape Town.

“The last few months on the sidelines have given me an opportunity to re-assess my career going forward and to plot some goals I’d like to achieve in the future,” he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. “While a decision like this is never easy, I also feel that it is the right time for me to pass on the baton.

“I will still be available to play international and domestic T20 cricket, but would also like to invest more time towards my growing family, who are my number one priority.

“I have been privileged to live out my dream playing a sport I love, and I am forever grateful for the support I have received from my teammates, coaches, family, friends and fans throughout the years.”

Duminy has featured in 193 ODIs to date and has scored 5,047 runs, which includes four centuries and 27 half-centuries, at an average of 37.38. He has also taken 68 wickets at an average of 45.08.

Duminy’s decision to retire from ODIs comes just over a week after spinner Imran Tahir confirmed that he would be bidding adieu to the 50-over format after the World Cup.
