Marcus Stoinis walloped an unbeaten 78 and took two wickets as the Melbourne Stars beat their crosstown rivals, the Melbourne Renegades, by seven wickets.

Being put in to bat first, the Renegades got off to a good start as openers Sam Harper and Mackenzie Harvey amassed a 52-run partnership before Harvey was caught by Stars captain Glenn Maxwell at mid-on off the bowling of Stoinis for 21.

Harper ended up making 30 before he was clean bowled by Adam Zampa.

The Renegades were then dealt three quick blows as they lost Mohammad Nabi, Cameron White and skipper Tom Cooper.

Dan Christian and Beau Webster came to the rescue with a 50-run partnership before Christian was dismissed by Dwayne Bravo for 32.

With the Renegades continuing to lose wickets in a hurry after Christian’s dismissal, they ended up finishing on 148/9 off their 20 overs.

Bravo was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Stoinis and Scott Boland snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Zampa and Sandeep Lamichhane, they chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 149 to win, the Stars made a great start to their innings as Stoinis and Ben Dunk forged a 67-run stand before Dunk was stumped by Harper off the bowling of Cameron Boyce for 32.

Nick Larkin was run out by Nabi soon after, but Stoinis and Maxwell stabilised the innings with a 65-run partnership, during which Stoinis surpassed his fifty.

Maxwell eventually suffered the same fate as Dunk after scoring a 22-ball 33.

Stoinis led the Stars across the finish line and remained unbeaten on 78, which came off 49 balls and included four boundaries and four sixes.

Boyce was the only bowler to take any wickets.

Stoinis was named Man of the Match.
