Debutant Shadman Islam and captain Shakib Al Hasan scored 76 and 55 not out respectively as Bangladesh claimed the upper hand over the West Indies on the opening day of the second Test in Dhaka.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh made a solid start to their innings as Shadman and Soumya Sarkar amassed a 42-run partnership before Sarkar was caught by Shai Hope at slip off the bowling of Roston Chase for 19.

Shadman and Mominul Haque added 45 runs to the score before Mominul was caught by Chase at long-on off the bowling of Kemar Roach for 29.

Shadman and Mohammad Mithun kept the runs flowing with a 64-run stand before Mithun was clean bowled by Devendra Bishoo for 29.

Shadman went on to score 76, which came off 199 balls and included six boundaries, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Bishoo.

Mushfiqur Rahim was clean bowled by Shermon Lewis for 14 shortly after, but Shakib and Mahmudullah ensured Bangladesh ended the day on a high as they forged an unbeaten 69-run partnership, during which Shakib brought up his half-century, before stumps was called.

Shakib finished on 55, which came off 113 balls and included a solitary boundary, while Mahmudullah also hit a lone boundary during his 59-ball 31.

Bishoo was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Chase, Roach and Lewis claimed one wicket each.

Bangladesh ended day one on 259/5 and will continue batting on Saturday at 09:30 local time or 03:30 GMT.
