The Kings XI Punjab have parted ways with former India opener Virender Sehwag, who held two different roles with the franchise.

Sehwag was the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise’s mentor in 2016 before also being appointed as the head of cricket operations and strategy last January.

However, with the Kings XI having brought in former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson as their new coach, the franchise had concerns that keeping Sehwag on board could lead to difficulties down the line.

Sehwag took to Twitter to confirm that he will no longer be part of the Kings XI.

“All good things must come to an end and I’ve had a wonderful time at Kings 11 Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead,” he tweeted.

While the Kings XI had the opportunity to renew Sehwag’s contract, they opted not to in order to give Hesson the freedom to pick his own support staff.
