South Africa pace bowler Vernon Philander is set to be out of action until November as he continues to recover from a troublesome ankle injury.

Philander, who has not played international cricket since July, has struggled to fully recover from the injury since he first sustained it when twisting his ankle in India in 2015.

While he suffered a recurrence of the injury, he started his bowling rehabilitation this week.

Even though it won’t impact his Test career, it could extinguish his hopes of featuring in next year’s World Cup in England and Wales. This is due to the fact that he will miss the upcoming limited overs series against Zimbabwe.

To make matters worse, Philander has not represented the Proteas in an ODI since August 2015.

It is likely that Philander will make a comeback during South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 competition, which is scheduled to take place between early November and mid-December.

But, should that not happen, the 33-year-old will likely make his return during the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan in Centurion.
