South Africa captain Faf du Plessis will be out of action for up to six weeks due to a shoulder injury.

Du Plessis sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch in the 10th over of the third ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

As a result of his injury, he will miss the last two ODIs, along with the one-off Twenty20 International.

“Faf sustained an injury to one of the rotator cuff tendons in his right shoulder and will unfortunately be unavailable for the rest of the tour,” South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “He will need a rehabilitation period of up to six weeks to make a full recovery. His return date back to South Africa will be confirmed in due course.”

South Africa have opted not to call up anyone to replace Du Plessis, and one of the players in the current squad will take over as interim captain.

Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram are seen as the three frontrunners to replace Du Plessis as captain for the remaining matches since they have all led the Proteas in the past.
