Waqar Younis believes Pakistan are favourites to win the 2019 World Cup since they have fared extremely well in English conditions.

Next year’s World Cup will be held in England and Wales, and given the fact that Pakistan won their first-ever Champions Trophy last year, Waqar has backed them to win the World Cup for the first time since 1992.

“It is too early to say who will be the winner as there is still a year to go, but Pakistan’s recent track record in England has been impressive,” the legendary Pakistan pace bowler was quoted as saying by CricTracker. “They finished runners-up in the 1999 edition and then won the T20 World Cup in 2009. Last year, they won the Champions Trophy which shows Pakistan’s [impressive] record in England.”

England limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan agreed with Waqar that Pakistan could potentially go all the way at the marquee event, but added that India and his own side are also among the frontrunners.

“In last year’s Champions Trophy, Pakistan had a very strong and young team and was one of the best teams of the tournament,” he said. “We have to consider both Pakistan and India as well as ourselves and continue to learn from our mistakes.”
