Australia head coach Justin Langer has revealed that opener D’Arcy Short is eager to open the batting in all three formats.

Short became a household name following the recent Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he scored 572 runs for the Hobart Hurricanes, which included a century and four half-centuries, at an average of 57.20.

He also recently featured at the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he scored 115 runs in seven matches for the Rajasthan Royals at an average of 16.42.

To date, Short has only represented Australia in Twenty20 Internationals. However, in the five matches he has played, he has made two fifties and is averaging 49.

Short is set to make his ODI debut next month as he was included in Australia’s squad for the limited overs tour of England.

Short is also determined to occupy one of the opening positions in the Test side since regular openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned for 12 and nine months respectively for their roles in the ball tampering scandal that shocked the cricketing world.

“(Short) said to me, ‘Mate, I just want you to know, I want to be an opening batsman’,” Langer had told cricket.com.au. “I said, ‘Really?’.

“He said, ‘Yep, that’s what I want to do. I want to commit to that. I want to be an opening batsman in red-ball cricket as well’.¬†For me, that’s a great sign. He’s starting to grow, starting to blossom.”
