Former Australia captain Ian Chappell believes that Jason Gillespie would be a better choice for the vacant head coach job in comparison to Justin Langer.

Chappell’s comments come after reports indicated that Cricket Australia were set to appoint Langer as Darren Lehmann’s successor.

Lehmann stepped down from the head coach position in the aftermath of the ball tampering scandal, which saw Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft be banned by Cricket Australia.

Smith and Warner were banned for 12 months, while Bancroft was suspended for nine months.

Langer has enjoyed a lot of successful with Western Australia and has also been coaching the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL), who have won the tournament three times.

However, Chappell feels that Gillespie would make a better candidate as he led Yorkshire to back-to-back County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015.

“He’s got a good understanding of cricket,” Chappell told Macquarie Sports Radio as quoted by foxsports.com.au. “When you talked to him while he was playing he was very interested in the history of the game.

“So I thought he played the game with a lot of integrity. He was obviously a very good bowler. He’s had a lot of success in that position in some different position. Yorkshire obviously, a hell of a lot of success there.

“I just find him a decent bloke. The sort of guy … that doesn’t get in the way but he’s helpful in his own quiet way.”
