South Africa stand-in captain JP Duminy has admitted that batsman AB de Villiers has “to fire on all cylinders” if the Proteas are to have a good chance of beating India in the upcoming three-match Twenty20 series.

Duminy was handed the reins for the Twenty20 series after regular skipper Faf du Plessis fractured his right index finger in the first ODI.

De Villiers missed the first three ODIs, but returned for the last three and scored 62 runs at an average of 20.66.

With India having recorded their first-ever bilateral ODI series win in South Africa after beating the Proteas 5-1, Duminy has his sights set on redemption.

But, in order to do this, the 33-year-old reiterated that he needs De Villiers to be at his very best throughout the series, which begins on Sunday in Johannesburg.

“The standard that he sets for himself is a high one on a whole,” Duminy was quoted as saying by sacricketmag.com. “He prides himself on his performances and he will no doubt be hungry to put in a big performance for the team.

“So I expect nothing less from him, as much as he expects nothing less from himself. I’m looking forward to what he can produce.”
