England head coach Trevor Bayliss has made it clear that national team players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be closely monitored.

With a hectic summer at home coming up, Bayliss insisted that should players complain of any problems prior to the tournament, they will not be permitted to travel to India.

Furthermore, they will be recalled to England if they sustain any injuries while playing in the tournament.

Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Mark Wood, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer are the English players that were bought at the IPL auction over the weekend.

“We have important series on the way and if they have to come back early then they will,” Bayliss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “If they have niggles they will not go. If someone gets a bit of a niggle while they are there we will pull them back.”

Having worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the past, Bayliss knows how useful the IPL can be in helping develop players’ skills and mindsets.

To further illustrate his point, he used Stokes as an example as the all-rounder was named the Most Valuable Player last year. Stokes represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants and scored 316 runs in 12 matches at an average of 31.60. He also took 12 wickets at an average of 26.33.

“If we look at Stokes he was on fire last year,” Bayliss said. “I’m not saying that will happen to everybody, but the way he batted when he came back it was a step up in class from where he was before.

“It is a learning curve for everyone. But just the experience they get playing in some of these tournaments against some of the best players in the world, with different coaches in different environments with big crowds is huge. I think in the past the English players have missed out on that.”
