Ashton Agar took three wickets and scored an unbeaten 26 as the Perth Scorchers defeated the Adelaide Strikers by six wickets in Alice Springs.

The Scorchers’ win put them at the top of the Big Bash League standings, while the Strikers slipped down to second.

Being put in to bat first, the Strikers made a solid start to their innings as openers Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald amassed a 49-run partnership before Weatherald was trapped lbw off the bowling of Will Bosisto for 19.

Captain Colin Ingram and Jonathan Wells fell shortly after for three and 10 respectively, while Carey went on to score 44 off 32 balls, which included two boundaries and two sixes, before he was caught by Joel Paris off the bowling of Matthew Kelly.

Once Carey was dismissed, the Strikers imploded as Ashton Agar and Tim Bresnan ripped through their lower order.

In the end, the Strikers went from being 80/4 to being bowled out for 112.

Agar was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Bresnan and Kelly snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Bosisto and Paris, they chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 113 to win, the Scorchers lost Bosisto in the third over as he was caught by Peter Siddle at mid-on off the bowling of Michael Neser for three runs.

Michael Klinger managed to make a 14-ball 17 before he was brilliantly caught by Ben Laughlin off the bowling of Neser.

Cameron Bancroft fared no better as he was sent packing by Siddle for 15, while stand-in captain Ashton Turner was clean bowled by Rashid Khan for one run.

Despite their rocky start, the Scorchers managed to reach their target with 10 balls to spare courtesy of Hilton Cartwright and Agar’s unbeaten 71-run partnership.

Cartwright finished on 47 off 44 balls, which included two boundaries and two sixes, while Agar remained undefeated on 26 off 29 deliveries, which included a solitary boundary.

Neser was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Siddle and Rashid claimed one wicket each.

Agar was named Man of the Match.
