Australia openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft scored an unbeaten 60 and 51 not out respectively to leave their side just 56 runs away from going 1-0 up in the Ashes.

Starting off the day on 33/2, England added 29 runs to their overnight score before Mark Stoneman was caught by Australia captain Steve Smith at slip off the bowling of Nathan Lyon for 27.

Dawid Malan, who only mustered four runs, fell shortly after as he suffered the same fate as Stoneman.

England captain Joe Root, who was at the crease with Stoneman at the beginning of the day, went on to bring up his fifty. However, his time at the crease came to an end soon after as he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for 51, which came off 104 balls and included five boundaries.

Moeen Ali made a encouraging 40 before he was stumped by Tim Paine off the bowling of Lyon. There was some controversy surrounding Moeen’s dismissal as questions were raised about whether a small part of his foot was behind the crease when the bails were taken off. However, the third umpire ruled Moeen was out and the all-rounder had no choice but to trudge back to the pavilion.

Mitchell Starc took over from that point as he removed Chris Woakes, wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow and Stuart Broad in quick succession.

England ended up being bowled out for 195, which set Australia a target of 170 to win, when Jake Ball was sent packing by Pat Cummins for one run.

Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon picked up three wickets apiece, while Cummins chipped in with one.

Chasing 170 to win, Australia made a fantastic start to their innings as Warner and Bancroft amassed an unbeaten 114-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their fifties, before stumps was called.

Warner finished on 60 off 86 balls, which included eight boundaries, while Bancroft remained undefeated on 51 off 119 deliveries, which included five boundaries and a six.

Australia ended day four on 114/0 and will continue batting on Monday at 10:00 local time or 00:00 GMT.
