Dean Elgar scored an unbeaten 128 as South Africa tormented Bangladesh on the first day of the first Test in Potchefstroom.

Elgar was well supported by debutant Aiden Markram, who fell agonisingly short of scoring a hundred, and Hashim Amla, who made an unbeaten 68.

Being put in to bat first, South Africa made an excellent start to their innings as Dean Elgar and Markram amassed a 196-run partnership, during which both batsmen cruised past their fifties and were on the verge of bringing up their centuries.

However, there was to be no hundred on debut for Markram as a mix-up between him and Elgar saw him get run out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 97, which came off 152 balls and included 13 boundaries.
