Luke Ronchi kept the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ CPL campaign alive

Guyana Amazon Warriors wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi clubbed a glorious 70 to help his side beat the Jamaica Tallawahs by five wickets and end their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign.

As a result of their victory, the Amazon Warriors will face the Trinbago Knight Riders in the second qualifier, where the winner will go on to face the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the final.

Being put in to bat first, the Tallawahs got off to a rapid start as openers Kennar Lewis and Lendl Simmons amassed a 40-run partnership before Lewis was dismissed by Rayad Emrit for 15.

Simmons went on to make a 25-ball 34 before being removed by Steven Jacobs, who took out Mahmudullah four balls later.

Tallawahs captain Kumar Sangakkara and Trevon Griffith steadied things temporarily with a 39-run stand before Griffith was caught behind off the bowling of Roshon Primus for 20.

Things went downhill for the Tallawahs one Griffith was out as Rashid Khan took a hat-trick in the 15th over as he dismissed Andre McCarthy, Jonathan Foo and Rovman Powell in successive deliveries.

Following Rashid’s moment of pure magic, Sangakkara began to up the ante and ended up finishing unbeaten on 57, which came off 38 balls and included seven boundaries.

Thanks to Sangakkara, the Tallawahs made 168/8 off their 20 overs.

Rashid was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Jacobs took two, and Emrit, Primus and Sohail Tanvir chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 169 to win, Tanvir fell to Krishmar Santokie early on, but Chadwick Walton and Ronchi made up for it by amassing a 67-run partnership.

Mahmudullah ended up providing the breakthrough for the Tallawahs as he sent Walton packing for a 23-ball 39.

Even though Jason Mohammed and Gajanand Singh were on their way back to the pavilion shortly after, Ronchi powered the Amazon Warriors towards their target.

But, when they were 14 runs away from victory, Ronchi was given out lbw off the bowling of Mohammad Sami for 70, which came off 33 balls and included five boundaries and five sixes.

Despite Ronchi’s dismissal, the Amazon Warriors went on to win the match with 13 balls to spare.

Mahmudullah was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Santokie and Sami claimed one wicket each.
