CPL 2017 28th Match: Walton, Ronchi blow Tallawahs away

Chadwick Walton and Luke Ronchi smashed an unbeaten 84 and 55 not out respectively as the Guyana Amazon Warriors waltzed their way to a nine-wicket win over the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Amazon Warriors’ win was crucial as it more than likely guarantees their spot in the knockout stage of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). As for the Tallawahs, they continue to sit in second place with 12 points.

Both teams came into the game on a high as the Amazon Warriors crushed the Barbados Tridents by 99 runs, while the Tallawahs took down the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 41 runs.

Opting to bat first, the Tallawahs lost openers Glenn Phillips and Lendl Simmons in quick succession for 15 and 10 respectively.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara and Andre McCarthy stabilised the innings with a 79-run partnership before McCarthy was caught by Assad Fudadin at deep midwicket off the bowling of Roshon Primus for 44, which came off 35 balls and included four boundaries and three sixes.

Sangakkara went on to score 38 before he was dismissed by Rayad Emrit.

Once Sangakkara was gone, the Tallawahs began to collapse and ultimately ended up finishing on 149/7 off their 20 overs.

Emrit and Sohail Tanvir picked up two wickets apiece, while Primus and Veerasammy Permaul claimed one wicket each.

Chasing 150 to win, the Amazon Warriors did not get off to the best of starts as on the sixth ball of their innings, Tanvir was caught behind off the bowling of Oshane Thomas for a golden duck.

However, that was the Tallawahs’ last taste of success for the rest of the match as Walton and Ronchi went berserk during their unbeaten 135-run partnership.

The duo not only pummelled the Amazon Warriors’ bowling attack all over Sabina Park, but finished off the match with 59 balls to spare, which significantly boosted the franchise’s net run-rate.

Walton concluded the match on 84 off 40 balls, which included eight boundaries and six sixes, while Ronchi remained undefeated on 55 off 29 deliveries, which included four boundaries and three sixes.

Thomas was the only bowler to take a wicket.
