Former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi has been appointed as Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach.
Joshi, who arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday, signed a short-term contract and has already begun working with the national team’s bowlers ahead of their two-Test series against Australia.
The 47-year-old’s appointment comes as a bit of a surprise, especially as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had their sights set on ex-Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill.
However, once talks with between the board and MacGill failed to happen, the BCB decided to go after Joshi as both parties had spoken about the position earlier in the year.
During Bangladesh’s one-off Test match in India, then-India head coach Anil Kumble had recommended Joshi to a few of the BCB’s board directors. But, even though negotiations took place, no deal could be made.
Bangladesh’s Test series against Australia gets underway in Dhaka on Sunday, while the second Test will be held in Chittagong on September 4.
