“It’s all being left now until the end of the series”

England bowling coach Ottis Gibson has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to replace Russell Domingo as South Africa’s head coach.

However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said that they have not been contacted by Cricket South Africa and won’t entertain any offers until the ongoing four-Test series against the Proteas concludes on Tuesday.

Domingo’s contract comes to an end at the end of the series, but while he has re-applied for the post, it is understood that Cricket South Africa are leaning towards replacing him with Gibson.

When asked about it, England assistant coach Paul Farbrace took a similar stance to the ECB, saying that everything will be looked into once the Test series ends.

“Ottis is someone who has obviously had a lot of international experience,” he added. “He did a great job for the West Indies, won the Twenty20 World Cup as a head coach, then lost out in a semi-final against Sri Lanka – which was a bit unfortunate for him.

“But at the moment Russell Domingo is head coach of South Africa and doing a brilliant job and it would be disrespectful of us to talk about his position all the time he’s in it.

“We’ve obviously heard the news tonight, but I promise you we’ve had nothing official. It’s all being left now until the end of the series, I hope.”
