“We want (them) to get everything in order, otherwise we’ll be compelled to take tough action in future”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made it clear that players face serious repercussions if they find themselves involved in a scandal of any nature.

The announcement comes after the pace bowler Mohammad Shahid’s wife filed a complaint against him for torturing her.

Last weekend, Farzana Akther told the BCB that Shahid had allegedly hid his marriage from other women. Upon confronting him about it, Farzana claimed that Shahid tortured her.

However, Shahid, who is currently nursing a knee injury, denies the allegations against him, and told AFP: “The allegation of torture is not true. Somebody is provoking her to raise complaint against me.”

When asked about it, BCB president Nazmul Hassan admitted that the board cannot keep track of the players at all times.

“We have tried a lot to control them when they are with the squad. We’ve become tougher when they stay in hotels under our care,” he said. “The problems start when they leave (the hotel). We cannot monitor their personal issues. We have taken action against similar incidents in the past. We want (them) to get everything in order, otherwise we’ll be compelled to take tough action in future.”

Shahid is not the first Bangladeshi player to find himself in the spotlight in regards to a personal scandal as in 2015, an actress claiming to be Rubel Hossain’s wife accused him of raping her. However, the charges were later withdrawn.

Last year, seamer Shahadat Hossain and his wife were in police custody for almost two months after they were arrested for torturing an 11-year-old girl they had hired as a maid. But, Shahadat and his wife ended up being acquitted of all charges.
