Broad excelled with both the bat and ball

Stuart Broad smashed an entertaining 57 and followed it up with two wickets to ensure England maintained the upper hand over South Africa on the second day of the first Test at Lord’s.

Starting off the day on 357/5, England were only able to add 10 runs to their score before South Africa got the golden wicket of captain Joe Root, who was caught behind off the bowling of Morne Morkel for 190, which came off 234 balls and included 27 boundaries and a six.

Morkel struck again just two balls later as he trapped Liam Dawson lbw for a duck.

Moeen Ali and Broad stabilised the innings with a 46-run partnership before Moeen was clean bowled by Kagiso Rabada for 87 off 147 deliveries, which included eight boundaries.

Rabada took out Mark Wood two balls later, but Broad refused to go down without a fight and managed to lead England to 458 before they were bowled out when James Anderson was caught behind off the bowling of Morkel for 12.

Broad, meanwhile, remained unbeaten on 57, which came off 47 balls and included eight boundaries and two sixes.

Prior to this, Broad had not scored a Test fifty in 65 consecutive innings as his last half-century came at Trent Bridge in Nottingham during the 2013 Ashes series.

Morkel was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Rabada and Vernon Philander snapped up three wickets apiece.

Trailing by 458 runs, South Africa debutant Heino Kuhn didn’t last long as he was sent packing by Broad for just one run.

Stand-in captain Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla made up for the loss of Kuhn with a 72-run partnership, during which Elgar brought up his fifty, before Amla was given out lbw off the bowling of Moeen for 29.

Elgar ended up making 54 off 118 balls, which included eight boundaries, before he became Moeen’s second victim.

JP Duminy only managed to make 15 runs before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Broad.

With the Proteas having lost three wickets in quick time, Theunis de Bruyn and Temba Bavuma steadied the ship with a 99-run stand before De Bruyn was caught behind off the bowling of Anderson for 48.

Bavuma and Rabada ensured South Africa made it to stumps without losing another wicket as they amassed an unbeaten 11-run partnership.

Bavuma finished on 48 off 102 balls, which included eight boundaries, while Rabada remained undefeated on nine off 12 deliveries, which included a solitary boundary.

Broad and Moeen took two wickets apiece, while Anderson claimed one.

South Africa ended day two on 214/5 and will continue batting on Saturday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
