The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which consists of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, have sought more time to decide whether to retain Anil Kumble as India’s head coach.

Kumble’s tenure as head coach will come to an end after the Champions Trophy, but he re-applied for the position even though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that he would be among the final group of candidates considered for the post.

There were initially doubts about whether Kumble would stay on as head coach since there were reports of a rift between him and India captain Virat Kohli, who allegedly said that the 46-year-old’s coaching style was “intimidating”.

However, with Kohli having played down those rumours, Kumble’s chances of keeping hold of the position have drastically increased.

“The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the BCCI met today and discussed the process with regard to the selection of the head coach of the Senior India Men team and it was decided by the CAC to revert to the BCCI, at an appropriate time,” a BCCI statement said.

With the CAC needing more time to look over the other candidates, which include former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody and ex-India opener Virender Sehwag, it is likely that Kumble will continue to coach India when they travel to the West Indies for a limited overs series after the Champions Trophy.

Should Kumble not go on that tour though, assistant coach Sanjay Bangar will take over.
