“He would definitely be a loss if he couldn’t play”

England all-rounder Chris Woakes could potentially miss the rest of the Champions Trophy after suffering a left side strain.

Woakes only bowled two overs in England’s opening game against Bangladesh at The Oval on Thursday before leaving the field and not returning for the remainder of the match.

Woakes underwent a scan last night and England now face an anxious wait to find out how severe his injury is.

“It is a worry when he goes off the field and can’t come back on and bowl,” England captain Eoin Morgan said. “He’s going to have a scan tonight.

“He’s obviously been very impressive for us over the last couple of years — and a mainstay, very reliable guy. Side strains are a big confidence thing, aren’t they? He would definitely be a loss if he couldn’t play.”

Morgan also lauded the rest of the bowling attack for stepping up during Woakes’ absence.

“You know, when one of your main bowlers can only bowl two overs, it’s asking a lot of the rest of the team to be able to stem the flow,” he said. “At one stage, Bangladesh looked like they were getting 330 — and to peg it back from there I thought was a credit to them.”

England began their Champions Trophy campaign on the right foot as they beat Bangladesh by eight wickets thanks to a career-best 133 not out from batsman Joe Root.
