“I think I can have a pretty big role to play in this tournament”

Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa acknowledged that his side have selected a fearsome pace attack for the Champions Trophy in England next month, but added that he is optimistic of playing a big role during the tournament.

With conditions in England generally more suited to fast bowlers, Australia have stacked their pace attack to the point where it is oozing with talent as it consists of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson.

However, Zampa feels that as the competition progresses, his services may be needed on a more frequent basis.

“I think the general feeling is that the wickets here will slow up in the back end of the tournament,” he said. “I’m preparing for that, but I’m prepared to play every game. We’ve been selecting teams in the last 24 months (based) on the conditions and with the fire power we have with the ball, it’s always handy to have.”

Many feel that Australia will lean towards picking their seamers for most games, but Zampa pointed out that the team will be selected based on the conditions.

“The way we’ve selected teams recently, it’s just the conditions,” the 25-year-old said. “I think if the conditions suit, which hopefully they will for me, (I’ll play).

“You can see a lot of dry wickets in England as well so I think I can have a pretty big role to play in this tournament.”
