Coming into the final day, South Africa had their backs against the wall and were potentially facing the threat of losing the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

However, the rain Gods spared them from that potential fate as the last day was washed out due to inclement weather.

South Africa were in dire straits at 80/5 in their second innings going into the fifth day and to make matters worse, they still trailed by 95 runs.

But, for New Zealand, their home season ended in bitter disappointment as the rain washed away their chances of ending it with a series-levelling win.

As a result of their slim 1-0 series win, South Africa have now lost just one Test series away from home in the period between August 2006 and March 2017. To put that into perspective, it is five months south of 11 years.

Furthermore, the Proteas will overtake Australia to become the No. 2 Test team on the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.
