The rain had the final say in Dunedin

An intriguing finish could have been in store on the final day of the first Test in Dunedin, but bad weather kept New Zealand and South Africa off the pitch the entire day and ended the match as a draw.

South Africa were on 224/6 heading into the final day and had a 191-run lead in hand, but due to the heavy rain sweeping through, the match was officially called off at 1.40pm.

The second Test between the two nations will take place in Wellington on March 16, but the Black Caps have a few injury concerns as veteran middle order batsman Ross Taylor is likely to miss the rest of the series with a low grade tear in his right calf, while left-arm seamer Trent Boult missed the final session on the fourth day with a hip problem.

With New Zealand set to bring in reinforcements for both players, it remains to be seen whether the Proteas will make any changes to their squad.

Nonetheless, the second Test is likely to be a hard-fought contest as both sides will be gunning for a victory in order to have a 1-0 lead in their pocket going into the final Test in Hamilton on March 25.
