New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor may be ruled out for the rest of the ongoing Test series against South Africa after being diagnosed with a low grade tear in his right calf.

Taylor sustained the injury while batting on the second day of the first Test in Dunedin and had to retire hurt.

Even though he underwent scans and returned to the crease to finish unbeaten on 15, it remains to be seen how long Taylor will be out of action for.

“I wouldn’t say the confidence is that high. When I was walking out to the middle I was hoping I wouldn’t get timed out,” Taylor told RadioSport New Zealand.

New Zealand left-arm seamer Trent Boult admitted that Taylor’s injury didn’t “look too good”, but when asked about it himself, the 33-year-old said: “It’s just a small tear so it was nice to contribute in some sort of way and get a lead but I am obviously still frustrated.”
