“Misbah-ul-Haq has conveyed to the Chairman [of] PCB his desire to continue as captain”
Misbah-ul-Haq has ended all the rumours about his future as captain after announcing that he will indeed be leading Pakistan in their upcoming Test series against the West Indies.
Misbah’s decision to captain the Test team has also silenced the whispers floating around about his retirement for the next couple of months.
After Islamabad United were knocked out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Misbah confirmed that he would be talking with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan about what the future holds for him.
“Misbah-ul-Haq has conveyed to the Chairman [of] PCB his desire to continue as captain of the Pakistan Test team,” the PCB said in a statement. “Accordingly, the Chairman has approved his appointment for the upcoming West Indies Test series. The Chairman has also approved appointment of Sarfraz Ahmed as vice-captain of the Pakistan Test team.”
The 42-year-old has been heavily criticised ever since his side were whitewashed 3-0 by Australia, but it must not be forgotten that it was Misbah who guided Pakistan to the No.1 spot on the Test team rankings.
With Misbah nearing the end of his international career, it is understood that the PCB want to have a single captain across all three formats, and it is likely that Sarfraz Ahmed will be the man tasked with this as he already leads Pakistan in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals.
Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies will begin on March 26 and will consist of four Twenty20 Internationals, three ODIs and three Tests. The Test series will get underway on April 22 in Jamaica.
