Mathews has not sufficiently recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered last month

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh as he has not fully recovered from a hamstring injury.

Mathews sustained the injury while batting in a Twenty20 International against South Africa on January 22 and was subsequently sidelined for their ODI series against the Proteas and the recent Twenty20 series in Australia.

Mathews also missed Sri Lanka’s last Test series against Zimbabwe in October and November due to multiple leg injuries and veteran spinner Rangana Herath replaced him as skipper for that series.

It is possible that Herath could be handed the reins again, but there is also a possibility that Dinesh Chandimal could be given the leadership role. Upul Tharanga will also be in contention as he led Sri Lanka in their ODI series against South Africa and in the Twenty20 series against Australia.

Mathews, however, is “likely” to be available for the three ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals that follows the Test series, which begins on March 7 in Galle.
