“It’s time to move on”

Melbourne Stars captain David Hussey has announced his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL) following his side’s loss to the Perth Scorchers in the semi-finals.

Hussey retired from all other forms of cricket in 2015, but had continued to feature in the BBL.

The 39-year-old had been with the Stars since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2011 and led the side for the last two seasons, in which they reached the final in 2015/16 and the last four this year.

Hussey confirmed that his decision to retire stemmed from the fact that he didn’t want to occupy a spot in the Stars’ squad with so many young talented players making a name for themselves.

“I’m done. I spoke to the boys quietly last night,” he told SEN. “It’s amazing what you want to do, but you can’t actually do it anymore… I’m still pretty emotional about it.

“I’m sort of stopping a progressing of a young player coming through the ranks and achieving their dreams of playing at the highest possible level. It’s time to move on, but very thankful for what I’ve achieved in the game.”

In his BBL career, Hussey amassed 855 runs, which included three half-centuries, in 48 matches.
