“IPL is definitely on the radar and something I want to be involved in”

England opening batsman Jason Roy has revealed that he is determined to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year.

Roy recently featured in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he represented the Sydney Sixers and scored 92 runs in four matches at an average of 23.

The 26-year-old has never featured in the IPL before, but he will first have to get authorisation from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) before entering his name in the auction.

“The Big Bash has set a huge precedent and it’s an incredible competition so it’ll be quite hard to follow, but it’s worth giving it a try in England,” he said. “There’s no reason why not. The crowds over there are ridiculous and the pressure environments are incredible.

“The IPL is on the same wavelength as the Big Bash, it’s a competition I would love to be a part of and I’ve put my name in the hat.

“IPL is definitely on the radar and something I want to be involved in.”

The ECB have confirmed that a new Twenty20 tournament will be launched in 2020, with eight franchises replacing the 18 counties that currently play in the the Natwest T20 Blast.

With the IPL and BBL having established themselves as the elite domestic Twenty20 competitions in the world, Roy sees no reason why the new England Twenty20 tournament cannot join that list in the future.

“It’s pretty basic, (in the IPL and BBL) they pull in big crowds, they’ve got incredible players playing and they’ve got good pitches and boundary sizes,” he added. “It’s not rocket science, they just do it really well.”
