England opening batsman Haseeb Hameed is likely to head back to India after he undergoes surgery on his left hand.
Hameed, who made his Test debut in the ongoing five-Test series against India, was forced to return home to have a plate inserted in his hand after breaking his little finger in two.
The 19-year-old will go under the knife on Friday and will rest on the weekend before getting on a flight and returning to India to support his side in their last two Tests against India, which will be held in Mumbai and Chennai respectively.
Hameed earned the respect of the cricketing community after he fought through the pain to make an unbeaten 59 in England’s second innings in the third Test in Mohali, which the tourists lost by eight wickets.
With the Bolton native taking no further part in the series, England called up uncapped opener Keaton Jennings to take his place.
