Veteran Sri Lanka batsman Upul Tharanga will captain Sri Lanka during the upcoming ODI tri-series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies later this month.

Tharanga was handed the reins after regular captain Angelo Mathews and vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal were ruled out of the series as the former is recovering from “multiple leg injuries”, while the latter is nursing a thumb injury.

Tharanga made a comeback in the ODI squad during Sri Lanka’s tour of England and Ireland earlier this year, but only featured in the fifth ODI in the recent series against Australia.

Kusal Perera has been appointed as vice-captain, while pace bowler Nuwan Kulasekara has been recalled to the squad. Kulasekara has not represented Sri Lanka in the 50-over format since January.

Jeffrey Vandersay is also back in the squad after recovering from a finger injury, while the uncapped duo of Asela Gunaratne and Lahiru Kumara also made the cut.

Sri Lanka squad: Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwella, Upul Tharanga (capt), Kusal Mendis, Shehan Jayasuriya, Asela Gunaratne, Sachith Pathirana, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dasun Shanaka, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara, Suranga Lakmal, Lakshan Sandakan, Jeffery Vandersay.
