The St Lucia Zouks began their Caribbean Premier League campaign on a bright note as they breezed past the Trinbago Knight Riders by six wickets courtesy of Johnson Charles’ fantastic 52.

Being put in to bat first, the Knight Riders lost wickets at regular intervals for the first half of their innings as they were reduced to 58/3 in the ninth over.

Darren Bravo and Umar Akmal came to the rescue with a 66-run partnership before Akmal was caught and bowled by Shane Watson for 30.

Despite losing captain Dwayne Bravo and Kevon Cooper soon after, Darren Bravo kept his cool and ended up scoring an unbeaten 63, which came off 44 balls and included two boundaries and four sixes, as the Knight Riders finished on 162/6 off their 20 overs.

Watson was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Morne Morkel, Derone Davis and Nitish Kumar took one wicket apiece.

Chasing 163 to win, the Zouks got off to a solid start as Charles and Watson put together a 47-run stand before the latter was dismissed by Dwayne Bravo for 16.

Charles went on to score 52 off 38 deliveries, which included eight boundaries and a six, before he was sent packing by Sunil Narine.

Wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher fell for 23 and former Australia batsman Michael Hussey followed him back to the pavilion soon after for 16.

Even though the Zouks were losing wickets on a regular basis, David Miller and skipper Darren Sammy finished things off with five balls to spare.

Miller ended the game on 33 off 20 balls, which included four boundaries and a six, while Sammy remained undefeated on 11 off five deliveries, which included two boundaries.

Narine and Dwayne Bravo claimed two wickets each.

Charles was named Man of the Match.
