“He offered to pay for us insisting it was his way of welcoming us to New Zealand”

Pakistan Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi and opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad were unable to pay for lunch at McDonald’s when landing at Auckland airport on Monday, but they received their meals for free after a fan offered to pay for them.

The duo were carrying US dollars instead of local currency and would have left empty-handed if it had not been for Waqas Naveed stepping in and paying for their food.

Afridi admitted that he and Shehzad had forgotten to change their currency upon arriving and subsequently found themselves in a spot of bother after McDonald’s refused to accept their US dollars.

“There was this young man behind us in the line and he offered to pay for us insisting it was his way of welcoming us to New Zealand,” Afridi said.

Meanwhile, Naveed said that he was glad to have paid for Afridi and Shehzad and added that it was his way of welcoming the duo to New Zealand.

“It is a good feeling to have my local team, Pakistan’s team, over here,” he said. “I am going to support them all.”

Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand consists of three Twenty20 Internationals and three ODIs and will get underway on Friday in Auckland.
