West Indies opener Chris Gayle has opted to take legal action against Fairfax Media after they claimed that he indecently exposed himself to a woman during the 2015 World Cup.

Gayle has retained the services of Mark O’Brien, a leading Australian media lawyer, and will launch a defamation lawsuit against Fairfax Media.

The allegations against Gayle arose after he was fined $10,000 for the comments he made to Ten Network sports reporter Mel McLaughlin during a live interview in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).

According to Fairfax Media, Gayle allegedly exposed himself in an indecent manner during a training session at the Sydney Cricket Ground prior to the start of the World Cup.

As of now, there is also mounting speculation that Gayle may no longer be welcome to represent any franchise in the BBL.

However, Gayle’s manager Simon Auteri made it clear that the 36-year-old has denied all the allegations against him.

“Chris Gayle has strongly denied allegations first published by Fairfax Media that he indecently exposed himself to a woman during last year’s World Cup in Sydney,” Auteri said in a statement. “Despite such denials Fairfax Media continues to publish the false and defamatory allegations which have received widespread re-publication in media throughout the world.

“As a result Chris Gayle has retained Mark O’Brien, a leading Australian media lawyer to immediately commence defamation proceedings against Fairfax Media.”
