The Sydney Thunder got their Big Bash League (BBL) campaign off to a perfect start as captain Michael Hussey smashed an unbeaten 80 to lead his side to a comfortable 36-run win over the Sydney Sixers.
Hussey would have been mulling over his decision to bat first initially as his side were reduced to 69/3 in the 11th over, but Ben Rohrer scored a quickfire 30 to steer the Thunder’s innings back in the right direction.
Hussey helped his side finish on 158/4 off their 20 overs and ended up making 80 off 59 balls, which included five boundaries and four sixes.
Doug Bollinger, Sean Abbott, Nathan Lyon and Trent Lawford picked up one wicket apiece.
Chasing 159 to win, the Sixers struggled right from the get-go and opener Michael Lumb ended up being the team’s top-scorer with 34.
With all the other batsmen failing to make major contributions, the Sixers were skittled out for 122.
Andre Russell and Shane Watson snapped up three wickets apiece, while Clint McKay took two and Chris Green and Jacques Kallis claimed one wicket each.
Hussey was named Man of the Match.
