The Barbados Tridents kicked off their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign in extravagant style as captain Kieron Pollard smashed 48 runs and took two wickets to help them beat the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 49 runs.

Even though the Tridents did not get off to the best of starts, Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik stabilised the innings with his knock of 39 before Pollard took over.

Pollard hammered 48 runs off 26 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes, as the Tridents finished on 158/6 off their 20 overs.

Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Veerasammy Permaul chipped in with one.

Chasing 159 to win, none of the Amazon Warriors’ batsmen put up any resistance. To put this point into perspective, Brad Hodge and Tillakaratne Dilshan were the only two batsmen to surpass 20 runs, while the rest of the batting line-up failed to get past the 15-run mark. As a result, it was no surprise that the Amazon Warriors fell well short of their target.

Ravi Rampaul and Robin Peterson inflicted the most damage with three wickets apiece, while Pollard snapped up two and Jason Holder claimed one.

Pollard was named Man of the Match.
