England captain Alastair Cook has edged out legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest player in history to score 9,000 Test runs.

Cook accomplished the feat when he made 56 in the second innings of England’s 199-run loss to New Zealand in the recently concluded second Test at Headingley.

The 30-year-old beat Tendulkar to the landmark by 94 days and reached it when he played a lovely cut stroke through extra cover for four off the bowling of New Zealand off-spinner Mark Craig.

However, Cook isn’t the fastest batsman to reach 9,000 Test runs. That record belongs to Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who achieved the milestone in 172 innings. In fact, Sangakkara is the only player in history to have scored 9,000 Test runs in under 10 years.
