Cook celebrates after surpassing Gooch as England’s all-time leading run-scorer in Test history

England captain Alastair Cook has become the country’s all-time leading run-scorer in Test history after surpassing his mentor Graham Gooch on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

Cook only needed 32 runs to overtake Gooch, who scored 8,900 Test runs, and did it with a crisp drive off the bowling of New Zealand pace bowler Tim Southee after the lunch break.

Cook, who made his Test debut against India in Nagpur in 2006, also holds the record for the most Test centuries scored by an England batsman with 27.

In fact, Cook’s most recent Test hundred came in the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, where he made 162 off 345 balls, which included 17 boundaries.
