New Zealand struck back by taking five wickets towards the latter half of the first day of the second Test in Wellington after Sri Lanka dismissed them for 221.
Pace bowler Doug Bracewell starred with the ball for New Zealand as he took three wickets, while batsman Kane Williamson excelled with the bat, scoring 69 runs.
However, Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Pradeep deserves a lot of credit as well since he claimed four wickets.
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews would have been pleased with his decision to bowl first after New Zealand opener Tom Latham was caught behind off the bowling of Suranga Lakmal for six runs.
Hamish Rutherford managed to make 37 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Pradeep.
Ross Taylor and Williamson stabilised the innings with a 79-run partnership, during which Williamson brought up his half-century, before Taylor was clean bowled by Pradeep for 35.
New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum failed to trouble the scorers as he was cleaned up by Lakmal for a duck.
James Neesham made 15 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Pradeep.
Wicketkeeper BJ Watling fared no better as he was caught by Dinesh Chandimal at slip off the bowling of Mathews for 11.
Williamson went on to score 69 off 115 balls, which included nine boundaries, before he was clean bowled by Dhammika Prasad.

Mark Craig mustered seven runs before he was caught by Mathews at mid-on off the bowling of Lakmal.
Tim Southee did not score any runs as he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara at first slip off the bowling of Pradeep.
New Zealand were bowled out for 221 when Bracewell was cleaned up by Prasad for 16.
Pradeep was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Lakmal snapped up three, Prasad took two and Mathews chipped in with one.

Trailing by 221, Sri Lanka got off to a horrible start as opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne was caught by Neesham in the slips off the bowling of Trent Boult for 16.
Kaushal Silva only made five runs before he was clean bowled by Bracewell.
Lahiru Thirimanne failed to have an impact with the bat as he was caught by McCullum at mid-off off the bowling of Bracewell for a duck.
Mathews could not rescue his side as he was caught behind off the bowling of Southee for 15.
Prasanna Jayawardene scored six runs before he was caught by Neesham off the bowling of Bracewell.
Following Jayawardene’s dismissal, the umpires decided to bring play to an end for the day.
Sangakkara remained undefeated on 33 off 58 balls, which included three boundaries.
Bracewell was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Boult and Southee claimed one wicket each.
