South Africa’s pace duo of Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel ripped through West Indies’ batting line-up and even forced them to follow-on during the third day of the first Test in Centurion.

Trailing by 552, the West Indies got off to a great start as Devon Smith and Kraigg Brathwaite amassed a 72-run partnership before Smith was given out lbw off the bowling of Philander for 35.

Smith was not given out initially, but South Africa asked for a review. Since replays showed that the ball was pitching in line and going on to hit the stumps, the third umpire overturned the original decision.

Brathwaite ended up making 34 runs before he was caught by South Africa captain Hashim Amla off the bowling of Philander.

Leon Johnson managed to make 31 runs before he was caught by Robin Peterson, who was the substitute fielder, at cover off the bowling of Kyle Abbott.

Marlon Samuels scored 33 runs before he was clean bowled by Morkel.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul mustered 21 runs before he was caught by Alviro Petersen at second slip off the bowling of Philander.

Jermaine Blackwood failed to have an impact with the bat either as he was also caught by Petersen at second slip off the bowling of Philander for 12.

West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin fared no better as he was caught by debutant Stiaan van Zyl at cover off the bowling of Dean Elgar for 14 runs.

Jerome Taylor only made four runs before he was caught and bowled by Morkel.

Since Kemar Roach was unable to bat due to an ankle injury, the West Indies were bowled out for 201, which gave South Africa a 351-run lead, when Sheldon Cottrell was clean bowled by Morkel for two runs.

Philander was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Morkel snapped up three and Elgar and Abbott chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Since they still had a 351-run lead, South Africa decided to enforce the follow-on.

Trailing by 351 runs, West Indies opener Devon Smith accumulated five runs before he was caught by Temba Bavuma, who was the substitute fielder, off the bowling of Philander.

Smith reviewed the decision since he believed that he did not hit the ball. However, replays showed that he did in fact get an inside edge and the third umpire upheld the original decision.

Brathwaite managed to make 20 runs before he was brilliantly caught by Petersen at second slip off the bowling of Morkel.
