Sri Lanka spinner Dilruwan Perera took a five-wicket haul to keep his side on top against South Africa on the third day of the second Test in Colombo.
Despite South Africa captain Hashim Amla’s unbeaten 139, the Proteas gave Sri Lanka a 139-run lead when they were bowled out for 282.
Starting out the day on 98/3, Amla and batsman AB de Villiers converted their 27-run partnership into a 79-run partnership, during which Amla brought up his half-century, before de Villiers was given out lbw off the bowling of Perera for 37.
De Villiers reviewed the decision immediately, but replays showed that the ball had not hit the bat and was going on to crash into leg stump, which led to the third umpire upholding the original decision.
Perera struck again just two balls later when he was clean bowled for a duck.
Jean Paul (JP) Duminy only made three runs before he was stumped by debutant Niroshan Dickwella off the bowling of Rangana Herath.
Vernon Philander scored seven runs before he was cleaned up by Perera.
Dale Steyn managed to score 30 runs before he was caught by Kumar Sangakkara at long-off off the bowling of Herath.
Imran Tahir mustered 15 runs before he was caught by Upul Tharanga at deep mid-off off the bowling of Herath.
South Africa were bowled out for 282, giving Sri Lanka a 139-run lead, when Morne Morkel was caught by Kaushal Silva at short leg off the bowling of Perera for a golden duck.
Amla remained stranded on 139 off 382 balls, which included 12 boundaries. Not only was this Amla’s highest score against Sri Lanka, but he was also the first South African captain to make a century in the subcontinent nation.

Perera was the pick of the bowlers for recording his second five-wicket haul, while Herath snapped up four wickets and Suranga Lakmal chipped in with one.
With a 139-run lead in hand, Sri Lanka got off to a decent start as Tharanga and Silva amassed an unbeaten 11-run partnership before stumps was called.
Tharanga finished on six off 18 balls, which included one boundary, while Silva remained undefeated on five off 12 deliveries, which included one boundary as well.
Sri Lanka ended day three on 11/0 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 04:30 GMT.
