Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene scored a magnificent 165 and debutant Niroshan Dickwella struck 72 to add to South Africa’s woes on the second day of the second Test in Colombo.

South Africa captain Hashim Amla does deserve some credit though as he is currently unbeaten on 46.

Starting out the day on 305/5, Jayawardene and Dickwella converted their 20-run partnership into a 100-run partnership, during which Jayawardene surpassed the 150-run mark and Dickwella his half-century, before Jayawardene was run out by Alviro Petersen for 165, which came off 284 balls and included 17 boundaries and a six.

Dilruwan Perera mustered 12 runs before he was caught by Amla at mid-on off the bowling of Imran Tahir.

Dickwella went on to score 72 off 116 deliveries, which included eight boundaries and a six, before he was run out by Quinton de Kock.

Ajantha Mendis only made two runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Vernon Philander.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 421 when Suranga Lakmal was also caught behind off the bowling of Philander, but only for four runs.

Philander, Dale Steyn and Jean Paul (JP) Duminy picked up two wickets apiece, while Tahir and Morne Morkel chipped in with one wicket each.

Trailing by 421, South Africa got off to an awful start as Petersen was caught and bowled by Rangana Herath for two runs.

Dean Elgar fared no better as he was caught by Kaushal Silva at short leg off the bowling of Perera for just one run.

Amla and Faf du Plessis stabilised the innings with a 58-run partnership before du Plessis was caught behind off the bowling of Lakmal for 36.

Amla and AB de Villiers amassed an unbeaten 27-run partnership before stumps was called.

Amla finished on 46 off 134 balls, which included three boundaries, while de Villiers remained undefeated on 11 off 38 deliveries, which included one boundary.

Lakmal, Herath and Perera claimed one wicket each.

South Africa ended day two on 98/3 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 04:30 GMT.
